The Courage to Disappoint: How to Let Go of People-Pleasing - Galatians 1:10
In this episode, we chat about the concept of having the courage to disappoint others and break free from people-pleasing tendencies. People-pleasers often receive praise for their accommodating nature, but this can come at the cost of neglecting their own well-being. The negative consequences of perpetual people-pleasing are discussed, including self-neglect, passive aggression, increased stress, and being taken advantage of.
Those of us who struggle with wanting to keep others happy can learn a little bit from the passion of the apostle Paul!
Focus Passage:
Galatians 1:10 ESV - For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Main Takeaways:
When we seek the approval of man over God, we fail to serve Christ
Our confidence must come from Jesus
Learning to say "NO" is vital
It's impossible to please everyone - Jesus couldn't do it, and we cannot either
Prayer:
Dear Jesus,
It is difficult to disappoint others, especially when they are close to us. However, we want to please you over all others. Give us the courage to disappoint others when it means we are following your plans, purposes, and healthy rhythms of life. Help us continue to serve others with a happy heart and remind us when we feel taken advantage of or bitter that we might have fallen into a space of people-pleasing. Set us free from seeking the approval of man over that of God.
In Jesus Name,
Amen
