The Power of Your Words - Proverbs 18:21
Our WORDS have power!
Today’s focus passage is popular for and for a good reason. It’s all about how what we SAY can positively or negatively affect our lives. While external feedback can temporarily boost our confidence, the reality is that lasting change comes from within. It comes from our thoughts and our words.
Do you know someone who is always speaking negatively? You know, the type who believes the worst about everything. They never have a nice thing to say about anyone or any situation. They are contrary. Let me ask you a question: do you like hanging around with those people? Me neither…even though I have been that person in seasons of my life. #reformeddebbiedowner Those people tend to go through many hard things in life.
Alternatively, have you met a totally optimistic person? You know, who always looks on the bright side, rarely complains, and expects good things are right around the corner. I married one of those people. I love being around uplifting and encouraging people because good things seem to happen around them.
There could be more than a personality trait at work here.
Focus Passage:
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. NKJV
Main Takeaways:
- The book of Proverbs is more than just a collective of good advice. The sayings and admonishments contained within the book are God's invitation to gain wisdom and learn how life is best lived.
- Science and scripture are aligned on the power of what we say and think. The more we speak life-giving words, the more we experience positive outcomes.
- While we cannot stop a negative thought, we can reformat it into a positive one.
- Biblical affirmations are not just wishful thinking. Encouragement that is rooted in scripture is vital.
- If we want to change our lives, we must learn to change the confession of our mouths.
Prayer:
Dear Jesus,
We know our words have power. Forgive us when we speak death instead of life. Help us to recognize when we are in a pattern of negative thinking and speaking, and give us the wisdom to replace toxic thoughts with your truth. We desire a life of confidence, hope, joy, and faith. May our words align with your words.
In Jesus' name,
Amen
